Focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS) is a rather rare kidney disease that is associated with anabolic steroid use. Unfortunately, this disease shows itself symptomatic only at its very advanced stage, when the kidney is already failing and a kidney transplant is necessary.
Using anabolic steroids is a health risk and talk to your doctor about it. Get yourself checked regularly.
In a case report, German colleagues present a 42 year old bodybuilder with a failure of his kidney function. He had no other factors for the FSGS; family history and genetic markers were bland. It’s unclear how much the FSGS is influenced by the use of anabolic steroids, but it’s very likely that they played a major role.
